When Laura and Gary began planning their elopement, there was never much doubt about where it would take place.

The River Etive has long been a special place for them, so returning to Glen Etive to exchange their vows felt like the natural choice. Travelling over from Northern Ireland with their beautiful Doberman, Zeus, they chose to celebrate their marriage in the Scottish Highlands with a day that was entirely their own.

No guests. No expectations. Just the two of them in a place that meant something.

Taking Things Slowly

After a challenging few years supporting their daughter Skye through illness, this day offered something that can be surprisingly rare. Time to slow down, be present, and celebrate not only their marriage, but the relationship that had carried them through so much together.

With warm sunshine throughout the afternoon, there was no need to rush straight into portraits. Instead, we found somewhere to eat, shared stories, and spent a few hours talking about life, family, and everything that had brought them to this point.

There was no schedule to follow and nowhere else they needed to be. It was a slow and intimate day shaped by landscape, light, and connection, which suited them perfectly.

Creating Photographs That Reflect a Relationship

By the time we began photographing, everything had fallen into place.

The location overlooking the Three Sisters of Glencoe, the timing of the evening light and the way I guided Laura and Gary throughout the session had all been carefully considered.

As photographers, there are times when we simply observe what unfolds in front of us. This wasn't one of those occasions.

Throughout the evening, I took the lead. From choosing the location and timing to directing the poses and movement, my aim was to create photographs that felt romantic and connected, while making the most of the incredible landscape around us.

Knowing some of what they had experienced as a family, I wanted these photographs to show more than a couple standing in a beautiful place. I wanted them to reflect the bond they share and the relationship that had carried them through so much together.

After everything they had navigated over the years, it felt important to create photographs that celebrated not only their wedding day, but the connection, trust and love that had brought them to it.

When I think back on Laura and Gary's elopement, it isn't the weather or even the views that come to mind first.

It's the feeling of the day. Relaxed, meaningful and completely centred around the two of them. From exchanging vows beside the River Etive to spending a quiet evening overlooking the Three Sisters, every part of the day reflected what mattered most to them.

There was no pressure to follow traditions that didn't feel right. No expectations from anyone else. Just the freedom to celebrate their marriage in a way that felt authentic.

The photographs are simply a reminder of that.

A reminder of a beautiful day in the Highlands, a relationship that has weathered life's challenges together, and a couple who chose to celebrate their marriage in their own way.
