Skye Elopement | Beneath The Cuillin Mountains
For Steve and Vendy, choosing to elope beneath the Cuillin Mountains felt like the perfect way to get married. Joined by their two closest friends, they were married along a quiet track near Sligachan, surrounded by one of the most recognisable landscapes on The Isle of Skye.
Their ceremony was simple and personal. A local registrar led the proceedings, a piper added a distinctly Scottish touch to the day, and afterwards they shared whisky from a quaich to celebrate the beginning of married life together.
Making the Most of Changing Light
After the ceremony, Steve and Vendy's friends headed back to the Sligachan Hotel while the three of us spent some time creating photographs together beneath the Cuillin mountains.
The weather never really settled throughout the afternoon. Clouds drifted across the landscape, darkening the mountains one moment before allowing soft light to break through the next.
Rather than waiting for perfect conditions, we worked with what Skye gave us.
Throughout the session, I wanted to create a mixture of photographs. Some focused on quiet moments between Steve and Vendy, while others used movement and the scale of the landscape to tell a broader story about the place they had chosen to get married.
Alongside the wider landscape photographs, we also created a handful of images that incorporated elements of the surrounding area that were important to them.
Returning to Where It All Began
What made this day special wasn't simply the location itself.
It was what the location represented.
For many couples, Skye is a place of adventure, dramatic landscapes and unforgettable views. For Steve and Vendy, it was something much more personal.
The Sligachan Hotel wasn't just somewhere they had chosen for their wedding day. It was where they first met.
Years after first crossing paths beneath the Cuillin Mountains, they found themselves back in the same place, this time returning to get married.
A Place That Shaped Their Story
When I think back on Steve and Vendy's elopement, it isn't the weather or even the views that stand out most.
It's the connection between the place and the people standing within it.
The Cuillin mountains provided an incredible setting for their wedding day, but the significance of Sligachan ran much deeper than the landscape itself.
It was where their story began.
Years later, they returned to celebrate their marriage surrounded by the people and places that had helped shape it.
The photographs are a reminder of that. Not just a wedding day in a beautiful place, but a celebration of a relationship in a place that had already become part of their story.
